Dear Ms Werner
I read recently that you are seeking proposals to encourage modal shift to rail, particularly innovations in infrastructure and operations.
My idea however is likely to be far cheaper than any of these, and appears on the face of it to be quite easy!
As a passenger who has recently defected from aircraft to trains for our annual holiday I am discouraged by the difficulty of actually booking a long journey where it involves more than one train operator. Websites loco2 and trainline are a big help of course (for those operators who are registered with them) but the simplicity that these sites provide is negated during the long period between operators opening services for sale 180 days prior to journey and those who do so later, at 120, 90 or 60 days.
I have found that in order to take advantage of affordably priced train fares it is necessary to book early. I have to be a diligent ‘travel agent’ with numerous calendar reminders, and there is always the risk that the timetable for part of a journey might change unexpectedly during the period after purchasing a ticket for one or another sections.
At the moment I am part way through booking our trip from Shrewsbury in the UK to Barcelona for June 2019. It serves as a good example of the difficulty:
2 December London to Paris
13 December Paris to London
4 February Paris to Barcelona
11 February Barcelona to Nimes
1 March Shrewsbury to London
11 March Nimes to Paris
11 March London to Shrewsbury.
All of the above for just a return trip to Barcelona, something which would be simplicity itself by air. When doing two or three trips in one year (as we did in 2018) the various booking dates overlapped and it became nightmarish at times!
I am sure you are well aware of this problem. Is there anything that can be agreed between track and train operators to use just one date, whenever that is? I believe it would make a huge difference as to whether more people would consider international rail travel a practicable alternative to flying.
Yours sincerely
